Absolutely beautiful!  A bit advanced for this noob at the moment, but wow - certainly a goal to work for.  Thank you for sharing!  :-)

    Hi aeryn987,

I think you could handle this one with no problem. We all started out as noobs but one way or the other managed to survive. Just go with folks who know the area and what to bring and expect and you will learn what you need to know. It won't take long before you have the conditioning and experience to go just about anywhere. The resources on this site are wonderful - I've met many new folks here and they are all great people and willing to aid and assist willing new participants.

I expect several Archer expeditions in the near future and if you are interested, stay tuned to this channel. :-)

    Best regards,

    Don

Jaimito, I can't see your pictures but I'm glad they put one on the home page.  That one made my jaw drop.  WOW!  I'm VERY interested in an excusion up there, but I'm afraid this middle-aged housewife can't keep up very well with some serious hikers like yourselves, so I'll have to try it alone when the snow melts.  I was thinking, though, that if there were enough people, a car shuttle could be arranged from Duncan Creek TH across the top, and down to High Valley.  Maybe then I could keep up.

When I went there and Duncan Creek few years ago with Roy Stout, I didn't take a camera, because I was so sure, I'd never be able to take pictures and keep up with the other hikers.  As it turned out, I had nothing to worry about; I was right in the middle of the group of a couple o' dozen hikers.  I wished I'd had my video camera as well.  While we were on top, we watched a black bear across the canyon in plain sight for at least half an hour.  One of our leaders said that bear is there every time he goes up there.

I went back a week later and took pictures from the valley floor.  Then we went to Duncan Creek.  I wanted to go back while it was all fresh in my mind so as not to forget how to get there.  What a difference a week makes, though.  The first time, in early April, the falls of Duncan Creek were quite impressive.  One dry week later, after bragging to my husband about it all, they weren't so impressive, but he said he still thought it was all very nice.  And of course, at lower water, we could get down and take pictures from creek level.

I was up there yesterday and made it to some clear views of Archer Falls. Soon after the ridge widens, the trail disappeared in the snow. It was quite a bushwhack to get to the viewpoint, including some thigh-deep snow drifts with holes in them caused by branches. It took about 3 1/2 hours to hike 3 miles in those conditions. The falls was running fairly low, but still spectacular. I don't reccomend the trip until the recent snow melts a bit. The snow level was about 2100 feet.

No dog, but yes on the volvo wagon.

Wondering if you thought I was the dog; being 12, I can't drive yet. That was my mom in the front seat. Also, why were you at the Smith-Cripe Rd. Trailhead if you were exploring Duncan ck.? Or did you do two outings in one day?

Sorry about the dog comment!!! We just caught a glimpse of something else moving in the car from a distance and just assumed it might have been a dog. Yes, we did two outings and explored all over the high valley area. We got there at 2:00 and left at 4:35. When you drove up we were just about ready to take off and should have waited for you and at least said hello. I'm glad you had a good trip and were able to catch some views of the falls. Is that a neat place or what!

    Best regards,

    Don

That's one of the more photogeinic gorge waterfalls that I've seen. Yes, it's definitely a great area. It's ironic that the most large waterfall-rich part of the washington side is the part that has no maintained trails. Thanks for all the info.

My original plan was to get to Cyntia Falls, but another 2 miles round trip in those conditions and I would've been hiking out in the dark. Duncan Creek's definitely on my list; thanks for scoping it out.

What did you explore? I assumed you'd gone down to Cable Falls. Or are there more hidden waterfalls in the area?

We just checked a few things out around the High Valley area. Interesting area - lots of history. The other folks had never been on that side of the mountain and Duncan Cr. didn't quite wear them out so they asked for some more abuse. :-) We will likely all get together again for a trip up Cable Creek to see all the falls when more snow melts. A rain-free day would be nice, too!

There is one falls on the south face of Archer Mt.that can be reached by trail and a slim possibility of a fifth small falls on the upper reaches of Cable Cr. When we go back we'll check that out.

You and your mom are really adventurous. That's a tough hike you tackled.

    Don

Welcome to the site, sorefeets. We already have a "Sore Feet", so don't be surprised if people get you mixed up occasionally.

What do you suppose is around that next bend?
