I made a trip up to Dog Mountain on last Saturday, May 24th. The trip report is posted here.

Here's an overview of the flowers I saw. Some of these I know and some I don't. I don't have the time this morning to look the up, so maybe it's time to start a conversation thread!

#1 I think this is Fine-leaved Desert Parsley??

    #2 Poison Oak

    #3 ???

    #4 ???

#5 Forktooth Ookow? I think this some Martian language.

    #6 Chocolate Lily

    #7 Candy Flower

    #8 Rosy Plectritis

    #9 Arrowleaf Balsamroot

    #10 Larkspur

    #11 Prairie Stars

    #12 False Solomon's Seal

    #13 Some sort of orchid??

    #14 Star-flowered Solomon's Seal

    #15 ???

    #16 Hooker's Fairy Bells

#17 Candy Flower in the back, but not sure about the foreground

    #18 Chickweed??

    #19 Ballhead Waterleaf??

    #20 Phlox

    #21 Some sort of violet??

#22 Strawberries in the back, something tiny up front

    #23 Vanilla Leaf

    #24 White Western Groundsel

    #25 Common Cryptantha

    #26 Paintbrush

What do you suppose is around that next bend?

#3 looks like threadleaf phacelia.  (It also looks a bit like blue flax, but I took a picture of threadleaf phacelia on Dog Mountain on 5/17 of last year, and I think that's what you've got there.)

#4 looks to be in the same family as cryptantha; maybe rusty popcorn flower?

Yes, #5 is forktooth ookow, possibly the best name ever for a wildflower...

#13: It's growing like a coralroot (which is an orchid), but the buds are too round... I think it's in the Ericaceae (heath) family.  My best guess would be a leafless (saprophytic) subspecies/phase of some kind of Pyrola.

#15 looks exactly like the picture in my book of big-leaf sandwort.

#17 is too small to identify, but it reminds me of baneberry.

#19 is probably ballhead waterleaf, although you don't usually see it that blue.

#21 is definitely a violet.  Maybe hooked violets.

The background of #22 is strawberries, but obviously not the foreground!  The small white/pink things look like they might be related to either phlox or fireweed; did they have 5 or 4 petals?

    Hi Steve,

#4 - I agree with Adam that this is almost certainly rusty popcorn flower (Plagiobothrys nothofulvus).

#13 - Steve, where did you see these? I will be visiting Dog Mountain soon, and would like to examine them more closely it in the field.

#15 - Adam is correct that this is big-leaf sandwort (Moehringia macrophylla).

#17 - Most likely Red Baneberry (Actaea rubra).

#18 - Most likely Field Chickweed (Cerastium arvense).

#21 - Adam is correct that these are early blue (a/k/a "hooked") violets (Viola adunca).

Greg #13 was just above the lower viewpoint, maybe 100 yards as a guess. After the lower viewpoint, there's a flat spot, then the trail starts climbing again. These are on the left side of the trail, right about where it starts climbing. On the other side of the trail there's a rocky area filled with rosy plectritis.

Isn't viola adunca the plant the endangered silverspots need?

What do you suppose is around that next bend?

Nice variety of flowers. I wonder if Dog Mountain will still be blooming next weekend, I would like to make it up there.
