This thread is not my idea , but its a good one. Its fun to see the pictures of the new hikers/backpackers we as parents are raising. I`ll be getting together my pics, I have grand kids to teach now to. So have fun parents and post away

Making the transition to his own two feet during ages 3 and 4 was a challenge. I've learned to be creative, flexible and much less goal oriented. Now we have a blast.

Awesome pics!  Hiking was always one of my favorite family activities when I was a kid.  I don't have any contributions, as my husband and I don't have kids yet, but we always say that our kid(s) will be hiking before they can even walk!

Here's Michael, now 15.

Slowly but surely, he's adapting. He can handle about one hike every 6 weeks. Have better photos, but this one was already in-gallery.

This was after 4 hours bushwhacking the redwoods, so he should look the part.

Yeh they sure are were all so lucky to have such healthy kids. Its a good life. Thats one big redwood awesome!

My son Ford is 10 1/2 now. He started doing the "good" hikes when he was 4 though he was either in a jogger stoller or backpack before that :)

I love this photo of him at Seattle Park, Rainier. It was taken in summer of 2005 I think. While I get bashed for it often, I let him bring his Nintendo. I figure if he carries it and hikes the miles..what do I care! This trip was cross country - he loves those trips.


Last summer:


He is a tall skinny kid with tons of energy. So the perfect hiking partner ;) Sadly we wear the same shoe size and he is about 2" shorter than me now. Agh!

    My son Skyler is about to turn 2 and was born on the first day of summer. I take him out hiking as much as possible, his first trip was to Dry Creek Falls when he was 2 1/2 weeks old…

This is a shot of him after we did a day trip on Eagle Creek last weekend, he doesn't know it yet but I am secretly training him to take over my role as crew leader for Trailkeepers of Oregon, formerly Trails Association of Oregon… LOL

Thanks for this thread… It's nice to boost about our little ones, and for all you parents I highly recommend reading the "last child in the woods"… Great book.

I have been taking mine hiking since they were very small as well. Here is a snack break on a hike we took by the Sandy river near my house. I packed their life jackets so they could play in the river when we stopped and so snack time was had with life jackets on :)

I have several trip reports on here of introducing my grandkids to the joys of backing, but with all the "server error in application" messages, you all will have to wait until we go up on the new server. I hope that will be soon?!
