The other thread on ID evolving into a bit of evergreen ID, reminded me of the Oregon State University web page...

    Tree Identification / OSU

I'd imagine that several folks have already seen this before.

Thanks mdvaden. I hadn't seen that web site before, but I do have several editions of "Trees to Know in Oregon".

Current editions have color photographs. The old editions from the 50s and 60s are pamphlet style, full of the most wonderful woodcuts and charming mnemonics. I will pick them up whenever I can find a copy, they are a treasure.

The author of recent editions and this web site is Ed Jensen. I had the pleasure of taking his dendrology course in 1999, and I recently ran in to him in the grocery store in Corvallis. He is a wonderful teacher.

Thanks, mdvaden! I have bookmarked it and will look up my mystery trees!

I have a lot of quaint old OSU extension service pamphlets, the least useful (nowadays) being "How to Iron a Man's Shirt," but not the one on trees.
May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view.--E.Abbey

Neat website. I've put it in my favorites.

    Thanks for the website link.

Prehaps people are already familiar with this, but in case you're not---

About 20 years ago I bought (for $2.00) this little booklet called "Pacific Coast Tree Finder" that is organized with a structure similar to the Dichotomous tree finder on this website. it is small enough to fit in the back pocket of a pair of jeans and only about 60 pages, but it has been by far the most useful source of information for me when trying to identify trees. I have learned more about different trees from this little book than from anything else I have consulted.

The company that publishes it "Nature Study Guild" publishes several other similar guides on wildflowers, berries, etc.

    See this website: http://home.att.net/~naturebooks/finders.html

(I don't know if this is the publisher's website or some retailer.)
