  • How to use the "Hiking in the News" forum

This forum is for people to share news stories with other hikers.  Please use these guidelines for posting to this forum:

    1. Put the headline and date in the subject line
    2. Put the headline, date and news source again at the top of the body of the message
    3. You can supply just a link (by highlighting the headline and hitting the hyperlink button (picture of a globe with a chain-link ) and pasting the URL

      or

You can paste the first few paragraphs of the news story, or a few sentence blurb with a link to read the rest of the story
    4. When copying contents from other site alway include the news source, date, and writer.  Don't post the entire article - add just enough to draw people's attention.  Make people go to the original source site to finish reading the article.  The point is to send traffic to the original.
    5. Please don't start a new thread in this forum without a specific news story link.  If you want to talk in general terms about a subject in the news, post to our "general" forum instead.
    6. Use a new thread for each new news story, even when a story is a follow up to a previous one.  That way, for instance,  headlines like "Wilderness Bill Becomes Law" don't get lost under threads named "Local Groups Lobby for Wilderness Protection"
    7. Of course, news stories should be outdoor related, or related to topics that would directly affect hikers.
    8. Avoid posting politically antagonistic editorials like "GOP Policies have ruined our National Forests" -- as we are not hosting a political forum here.  When reacting to news stories, please try to keep your replies politically neutral to avoid a mud-slinging free-for-all.  Moderators will step in and delete entire threads when this happens.  There are plenty of other places on the internet for that kind of debate!

    Thanks everyone!
