After a failed summit attempt of Saddle Mountain, I proceeded South for Cold beers at the Pelican Pub in hopes of a relaxing sunset, I was rewarded very much!

This is shot at F22, a split nd filter to balance the sky and water, NO color enhancements whatsoever!, five second exposure time.

I feel lucky to have captured this as I've photographed this spot several times but always felt I could do better:

Brilliant -- your gift at photography will doubtless be mistaken by some as a gift for Photoshop. The light and split filter makes it look like at least a dozen PS layers on the screen.

Cape Kiwanda was one of my favorite places when I was about as tall as a mailbox. Have not been back for some time.

Great shot and wow, what a sky!  That's mind blowing, I seem to have the worst luck with skies so one of these days I know it will all come back and balance out when I get a few sunsets like this in a row.

I constantly debate whether I want to invest in ND grads and systems and such but I usually decide no, because I am often so close to the water that I would never get more than a shot off without having to clear drops off of the lens.  I avoid that to some extent now with my gargantuan lens hood I put together with PVC pipe and a 102mm step up ring I bought at a photo swap meet.  Not sure If i could get it to work with all the extra stuff need to work with the grads.

I purchased the 78mm Tiffen Clear ND .6, which I can confidently say was the best camera related purchase I've made in the past 2 years.

I strongly dislike making multiple shots and then spending additional time trying to blend them in PS, with the added frustration of making it look too fake in the process.

I'm still a big believer in trying to get the shot done the right way the first time in camera.

Also I did underexpose by one stop as the 5D just loves to overexpose everything for some reason....

As far as authenticity, I've begun my search for a Canon Rebel G film camera, I think investing in a few rolls of slide film for special moments will validate the color/tonalities/etc on shots like this.  I've also thought about a large format 8x10 film camera as well, but I'm not sure if I want to make that kind of investment at this point.

Also, I'm shocked that more people are not out there photographing at this beautiful place.  There are a number of great compositions available looking from the northside out to cape lookout, as well as the shot shown above.  Sunrise is great as well, and  there are some reasonably priced places to stay in town.

And where are all the beer fans on this site?  I strongly suggest everyone try this one while awaiting for the sunset:

    "Grand Cru de Pelican

Grand Cru de Pelican is the result of inspiration, creativity, and imagination. With a nod to the great brewing traditions of Belgium, we have been inspired to create this dark, sensuous brew. Grand Cru de Pelican entices with a rich, complex aroma, and satisfies with deep malty and caramel flavors. Spicy, earthy and fruity aromatic flavors provide a harmonious counterpoint to the malty foundation of this robust beer. A snappy finish and silky texture enhance the smooth drinkability."

    That's a beautiful photo Chris.

I jut need to add that one of my greatest pleasures in life is hiking up that dune at Cape Kiwanda and running down. Nonstop.  If ( any of) you haven't done this, please try it next time, it will bring out the happiest boy or girl  inside.

I always thought you were supposed to take a running dive and roll down!

That is an awesome brew pub.  Best IPA made in Oregon.  The double IPA is great too.  I wish their bottles weren't so expensive.

I agree, some of the best beer in Oregon, don't let the bottled stuff fool you as it's much better on site!
