    Hello,

I am on holiday in Oregon and as someone who enjoys hillwalking and recently started mountaineering in the UK I'd like to check out the local countryside (I've seen pictures, it looks stunning!).

I would like to find out what the best way would be for me to go about finding people to walk or climb with in the next week or so. Are there clubs perhaps that are accessible to foreigners on short notice and/or for short periods?

I don't really understand local hiking difficulty levels here so I wouldn't mind some advice on what would be within my capacity (especially for the curent weather and trail conditions).

For pictures of walks I've been on click here or here.

    Thanks!

Welcome to the site and welcome to the US!

Some of our mainstays for visitors are the Mlutnomah-Wahkeena Loop and Eagle Creek.

You're also at the perfect time of year for Dog Mountain if 2800 feet (aka 900+ meters) of climb doesn't scare you.

You cna find these in our Field Guide at http://portlandhikersfieldguide.org/wiki/Columbia_River_Gorge_Hikes

What do you suppose is around that next bend?

I don't think Dog Mountain will scare him.

They're the west of the Scottish mainland, the isle of Skye (west scotland), the lake district in the north-west of England and Wales.

Dog mountain looks nice. Is it still snowing there or has it cleared up?

It's certainly cleared up... I plan to head there Sunday morning (along with the rest of the Portland population ;-). It is a super hike this time of year, so no wonder it is very popular.

On this site under" hikes listed for the weekend " on top left hand corner of home page, you will find about 10 hiking groups who also hike during the week, open to everyone (who can do the hikes!) I am also free to hike  next week(retired). The Lake Oswego Parks and Rec, and the Tryon Creek Day Trippers also hike Tuesdays and Thursdays. As far as climbing, most clubs cannot take folks on short notice, but you could try the Chemeketans and the Mazamas. Due to unreasonably high snow for this time of year, most will be snow climbs, you can rent gear from REI, Judith

My trip report from last weekend on Dog Mountain is here. It will be pretty crowded this weekend, but it should be gorgeous.

How long are you going to be here?

Are you going to another state next to us, or just returning to your home of origin?
