  • Gifford Pinchot NF gets $$ for flood repairs

From the Columbian, May 14--evidently nobody picked this up:

"The Gifford Pinchot National Forest will spend almost $600,000 this summer and fall repairing trails, many of which were damaged in the floods of November 2006.

"The U.S. Forest Service also plans four major road repairs, including three key routes on the southern end of the 1.3-million-acre forest.

"Robin Rose, recreation program manager, said road No. 81 north of Kalama Horse Camp, No. 83 east of Marble Mountain Sno-Park and No. 23 north of Baby Shoe Pass are slated for repair in late summer and fall."

The last means we won't have to go all the way to US 12 and halfway back to hike the north side of Mt. Adams.

    The rest of the story.
May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view.--E.Abbey

But not in time for most of us this year. I stopped by the ranger's office in Trout Lake yesterday and they said that the contract had just been put out and the repairs would not likely be done until September or October. Call ahead if you want to use this route.

And I tried to do a trip report on the Mt Adams area yesterday (and Trapper Creek Wilderness last week). All efforts to create a new post for over a week have failed with database resource errors, despite repeated tries. Obviously some people are doing them. But I can onyl add comments to existing threads. Here's to the new site when it's ready!

Oooh.. I've been wanting to know if the road up to Lava Canyon would be open this summer.. but from what you've quoted, it sounds like they won't get to these flooded trails until late summer. Bummer.

drm, I would love to read your report on Trapper Creek Wilderness! I plan on going there this mid-July and wondering what'd make a good night hike. Or good hikes in general.
